How to apply for Global Entry
Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. It is not mandatory for U.S. citizens, but it significantly reduces wait times at international airports.
The application process involves an online submission, a background check, and an in-person interview. Below is the step-by-step guide to navigating this process efficiently.
Steps to get Global Entry
Visit the Trusted Traveler Programs website to create an account. You will need a valid passport and a credit or debit card to pay the $100 application fee. The fee is non-refundable, even if your application is denied.
Log in to your TTP account and select "Apply for Global Entry." Fill out the form with your personal details, travel history, employment information, and address history for the past five years. Be precise with your answers; discrepancies can lead to delays or denial.
Most applications are processed within a few weeks, though it can take up to six months. You will receive an email notification once you are conditionally approved. At this stage, you can schedule your interview.
Book an interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center. Many major international airports offer these centers, and some locations allow for evening or weekend appointments. Bring your current passport and one other form of ID (such as a driver’s license). During the interview, a CBP officer will verify your identity, ask questions about your application, and take your fingerprints and photo.
Once you pass the interview, you will receive your Global Entry membership and Known Traveler Number (KTN) in the mail within a few days. You can often use your KTN immediately after the interview if your status updates in the system. Add this number to your airline profiles to receive TSA PreCheck benefits on domestic flights.
Common mistakes to avoid
Mismatched name formats
Ensure the name on your Global Entry application matches your passport exactly. If your passport lists "Robert" but your boarding pass says "Bob," the system may not recognize you. Update your profile in the TTP account before applying or renewing. Use the same spelling, middle initials, and suffixes across all documents.
Expired or missing membership cards
Global Entry and TSA PreCheck memberships have expiration dates (every five years). An expired card means you lose expedited benefits immediately. Set a calendar reminder for three months before expiry. Renew early to avoid gaps in coverage. While Global Entry is digital, carrying a physical card helps if your phone dies or the system glitches.
Ignoring program boundaries
Global Entry only covers U.S. arrivals. It does not help with outbound security checks or foreign customs. If you are connecting through a U.S. hub, you still need TSA PreCheck for your next domestic flight. Apply for TSA PreCheck separately if it is not included in your Global Entry benefits. Check your Known Traveler Number (KTN) on every booking.
Overlooking disqualifying factors
Certain criminal records, customs violations, or incomplete applications can lead to denial. Be honest on your application. Hiding a minor traffic ticket or past customs infraction can result in a permanent ban. If you have a complex history, consult an immigration attorney before applying. Transparency speeds up the interview process.
Not updating contact information
Your KTN is tied to your profile. If you change your address or phone number, update it in the TTP system. This ensures you receive important updates about your membership status or interview scheduling. Failure to update contact info can lead to missed communications and delayed renewals.
